Project: Comparing Performance of Scenes Using Real-time Level of Detail Computation with those Containing Character Animations Generated Offline
Supervisor(s): Amitava Datta
Project status: complete semester 1, 2009

This project aims to use a real time, interactive 3-D rendering of a flock of birds to demonstrate the use of Level of Detail (LOD) techniques in 3-D graphics. Using LOD techniques we try and optimize the use of our computational resource (CPU and/or GPU) and render objects further away from the viewer in progressively lesser detail. LOD techniques hold an ever increasing significance in 3-D graphics as user expectation of performance and realism outstrip the pace of development of new graphics hardware.
