Document Geocoding, the process of extracting geographic information from text, is increasingly being developed as a means of improving the effectiveness of traditional text based searches.
Search results can be filtered by their relevance to a desired location, as well as by their content. One approach to geocoding is to use Named Entity Recognition Techniques to derive a geographic "focus" for the document.
One problem with this method is that there is seldom enough context within a document for a computer to be absolutely sure which, if any, location a named entity is referring to.
The aim of this project is to implement a 'fuzzy' focus finding algorithm and to investigate different techniques for deciding between the multiple meanings of ambiguous place names.
The focus results will be combined with a traditional text based search with the expectation that it will increase the probability of discovering relevant documents.
