Project: Notating Vocal Music in Real-time
Supervisor(s): Du Huynh
Project status: complete semester 2, 2008

This project's aim is to develop a real-time system for music transcription of the human voice. A number of techniques for pitch recognition will be investigated, and a prototype system for each developed. These prototypes will then be compared in terms of efficiency and accuracy (against a standardised baseline), and the results of these data used to propose a system capable of running on a mobile phone; time permitting, this system will be developed. Although the system will initially be targeted solely toward monophonic vocal transcription (a single person singing), it will be developed in such a way as to allow it to easily be extended to include polyphonic and/or non-vocal transcription (that is, many instruments playing or voices singing simultaneously).
