Project: Automated Image Analysis of Geographic Raster Data
Supervisor(s): Rachel Cardell-Oliver and Eunjung Holden (GIS)
Project status: complete semester 2, 2007

The development of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has lead to an increase in the ability of geoscientists to view and analyse geographic information. Current GIS software such as ArcGIS and MapInfo include a well developed suite of vector analysis tools which can be applied to geographic data, but have a limited ability to analyse raster data. This thesis aims to produce a framework for automatic image analysis of geographic raster data within ArcGIS and to use this framework to identify linear anomalies in geophysical datasets. The design and implementation of this framework will also involve aspects of Test Driven Development, a software engineering methodology designed to control complexity and can be used to reduce risks which are inherent when interfacing with third party applications.
