Project: A User Event Reconstruction and Data Mining System
Supervisor(s): Cara MacNish
Project status: complete semester 1, 2007

X-Window Recording and Playback System (XWraps) is a system developed by DSTO that records how a user interacts with a submarine combat system. XWraps does the recording by keeping records of the X-Window events detected while periodically taking screenshots of the screen. An example of the recorded X-Window event is "0,6,467,408,0,0,0,22558895" which means X-Window event 6 (i.e. Key Press) is executed at coordinate (467, 408), at time 22558895. In order to be able to perform some analysis, these low-level events need to be translated into higher-level, human-readable events, such as "Start button is clicked". This process is currently done manually by an analyst, which makes it very slow and laborious. This project aims to automate the translation process and perform some automated analysis of unusual or unexpected patterns of behaviour.
