Project: Degrees of Freedom in Automated Face Recognition
Supervisor(s): Peter Kovesi
Project status: complete semester 2, 2005

This project attempts to determine the degrees of freedom in the Eigenface approach to face recognition. The Eigenface approach is based on a statistical technique called Principal Component Analysis, where it attempts to find the principal components of the distribution of face images. This technique is well known for its simplicity and computational efficiency. We aim to devise methods for estimating the number of degrees of freedom in the Eigenface approach. Experiments will be conducted to determine the smallest quantization sizes in the Eigenface space that can be used with safety. This will then enable the number of degrees of freedom to be estimated. Implementation of the technique and all experiments will be conducted using MATLAB.
