An important application of mobile IP in the wireless system is to provide mobile nodes with uninterrupted data stream connections to correspondent nodes via mobility agents (foreign agents and/or home agents). A failure in mobility agent causes the network service to be interrupted by which mobile nodes will not be able to maintain the constant network connections, thus increasing latency in packet delivery. While the importance to tolerate mobility agent failures in mobile IP has already been addressed by several fault-tolerant mobility agent protocols, all have latency in packet delivery. Hence, we present a low-latency fault-tolerant protocol for mobile IP in wireless systems. The proposed method works by allocating exactly one primary mobility agent and one backup mobility agent in a distributed fashion for each mobile node in the wireless system prior to mobile nodes' registration with their home agents. Latency in packet delivery is reduced by eliminating the need of mobile nodes' re-registrations with their home agents when foreign agents fail and reconstructing the binding information by searching through all foreign agents' mobility binding tables when home agents fail. With slight hardware and local traffic overhead increase, the justification that the proposed model has lower latency in packet delivery as compared to previous protocols is validated by the simulation results produced from running the experiment.
