Project: NASRay: An Underwater Acoustics Simulator
Supervisor(s): Nick Spadaccini and Anthony Zaknich (Electrical)
Project status: complete semester 2, 2004

NASRay is an underwater acoustics simulator, developed by Nautronix Ltd. for generating test sounds for their underwater products. Processing time of the simulator was slow, so a faster implementation was desirable. In addition, it was not possible to simulate the movement of a group of receivers, such as those on a hydrophone array. These arrays are a critical component of many underwater acoustic systems, for determining the direction of received signals.
In this project, we present the enhancements incorporated into the NASRay simulator. These include a faster block-based algorithm used by the simulator, grouped movement and orientation using quaternions to ensure smooth rotations, and other improvements such as event-based actions and memory-usage optimisations.
