Directional antennas offer many benefits for communication in ad hoc wireless networks. The capacity of a wireless network increases due to spatial reuse of communication channels, increase of coverage range and reduction in message collisions. Most previous work for designing MAC protocols for ad hoc networks using directional antenna is concentrated in designing efficient protocols for mobile ad hoc networks. However, the requirements of mobile ad hoc networks are significantly different from that of static ad hoc networks like sensor networks.
In this project, we present a new MAC protocol specifically designed for static sensor networks. Our protocol eliminates message collisions almost completely in the long run. The surrounding region of each node is divided into several angular sectors. A node either sends to or receives messages from one of these sectors at a time. Our protocol starts with the normal CSMA MAC protocol. In the first phase, the nodes exchange schedules with neighbours to determine a scheduling strategy for message transmission. This scheduling strategy helps the nodes to determine exactly when they should send and receive messages and in which sector. The second phase of the protocol starts once this schedule is worked out. Experimental results show that the overall throughput of a static wireless network improves tremendously and collisions are eliminated almost entirely when the new protocol is used.
