Project: WiCTP: A Token-based Access Control Mechanism for Wireless Networks
Supervisor(s): Amitava Datta
Project status: complete semester 2, 2004

The introduction and growth of large, metropolitan-sized wireless networks has identified a significant problem within the current 802.11 protocol specification: hidden nodes. Hidden nodes dramatically decrease performance and throughput of networks where they are present, and the current solution, RTS/CTS, leaves much room for improvement. This project proposes a new token-based protocol called WiCTP that can be implemented on top of standard CSMA/CA and avoids several pitfalls associated with similar protocols such as WiCCP and Frottle. Tested on a real 802.11b wireless network with several hidden nodes, it successfully improved network stability and throughput with only small cost to overall network bandwidth.
