A remote laboratory allows a user to interact with a software interface and remotely manipulate real world experiments. The Telelabs initiative at UWA is a project aiming to develop technologies that enable laboratory equipment to be controlled remotely through the internet. This project will examine the Telelabs system and describe the process of systematically converting existing control code for a piece of laboratory equipment to conform to Telelabs' requirements and specifications.
The Telelabs software and the control software for the laboratory equipment were developed using LabVIEW, a graphical programming language used to create software for data acquisition and instrument control. This project will describe some features of LabVIEW and present the differences between the design of the original control software and the design required for integration into Telelabs. Modifications made to the original equipment control software in order for the system to be successfully integrated into Telelabs and hence be controlled remotely will be outlined. Difficulties encountered during the software redesign process will be discussed. This project showed that existing control software for a piece of laboratory equipment can be successfully restructured to conform to Telelabs specifications.
