Project: Reparsing Web Pages for the Visually Impaired
Supervisor(s): Peter Jones
Project status: complete semester 2, 2004

The visually impaired experience the World Wide Web via audio streams generated by user agents. These audio streams can be complicated by confusing layouts of web pages, creating frustration among users. Most websites are designed with the sighted in mind, employing constructs such as frames, images and tables to format layouts. Such practices give rise to navigation and orientation difficulties for the visually impaired. In addition, the visually impaired have to decipher content from a one dimensional audio representation of a primarily two dimensional medium. There are significant differences between a visually accessible page and one accessible via audio. Many have approached this problem from the hardware or the user agent software perspective. We propose that the issue can be approached by tackling the problematic medium itself. We build a delivery system, Galadriel that acts as a proxy server reparsing pages into a format more suitable for audio streams.
