CS&SE 4th Year Project Publication Grants Scheme

Since 2002, the School of Computer Science & Software Engineering has operated a grant scheme to encourage project students to publish their work at national and international conferences. In particular, students whose work achieves the appropriate standard of scholarship and novelty are encouraged to submit papers to conferences in the Australasian Computer Science Week. ACSW is the major national gathering of computer scientists and IT researchers in the Australasia region, incorporating 6-8 conferences and workshops and usually attracting over 200 delegates from institutions and companies all over the world. ACSW publishes papers in all areas of the discipline, and it provides an ideal forum for the presentation of work from promising young researchers.

Students benefit in several ways from presenting their work in this manner:

  • Getting a paper published looks good on any cv, and in particular it is likely to improve your chances of winning a PhD scholarship, if that may be a goal.
  • The experience of presenting a paper at a prestigious conference is invaluable, and again it looks good on your cv.
  • You will meet (and present to) potential employers from all over the world, as well as all of the major universities in Australasia and many other universities worldwide.
  • You will meet researchers and students from other institutions around Australasia and the world, giving the opportunity to make friends and contacts that will be fun and useful in the future.
  • And of course you will have the opportunity to travel to a different part of the country!

The School benefits from the increase in our research output and from the national exposure of our research efforts.

In 2009, ACSW will be hosted by the Victoria University of Wellington, in New Zealand during the earlier part of the year. Concrete details are not yet available, but the procedure of submitting a paper to ACSW will be roughly as follows.

  • In July/August, you should discuss with your supervisor what is required to generate a paper by the submission deadline, and whether a paper is a realistic goal given the status of your project at that time.
  • Papers of approximately ten pages need to be submitted by approximately early September, and are sent by the conference committee to two or three international referees for assessment.
  • Notification of acceptance or rejection should be available in early November, along with reports from the referees.
  • Authors of successful papers will be invited to submit updated versions of their papers, known as the camera-ready copy, by approximately early December. The camera-ready copy will be included in the conference proceedings.
  • At about this time, the School will notify successful student authors of the amounts of their grants and of the procedure for arranging flights, conference registration, and accommodation.
  • Through this period, successful authors will prepare seminars for presentation at the conference. These will usually be only slightly different from your project seminar presented at the end of the year.
  • In the new year, attend the conference and present your paper!

The procedure for submitting to a different conference would be similar, although the dates would probably be different.

Note that the School will also provide grants to support travel to other conferences of similar (or greater) standing to ACSW, but that the grants provided to students will be based on the costs of travelling to conferences in the Australasia region.

The amount offered by the School is unlikely to cover the full cost of attending a conference; the amount offered will depend on a number of factors including the number of successful student papers and availablity of matching funds.

Go for it!
