Accommodation and accessAll 4th year students are housed in the Honours/Masters lab - Lab 2.07 of the Computer Science building. You will have exclusive use of this lab, except during scheduled laboratory sessions for certain 4th year units (Thursday afternoons in semester 1, 2008).Access to Honours/Masters lab is via your student/security card. Security cards should be automatically programmed for access, but if you are having difficulties, see the secretary in Room 1.31A of the Computer Science building to get your security card reprogrammed. Once your student card is correctly programmed, you can use your student card to access the Honours/Masters lab, the undergraduate laboratories (Labs 2.01, 2.03, 2.05, and 2.07), the photocopier and library rooms on the 1st floor, your research lab (speak to your supervisor to see which research group you belong to), and of course the building itself. Please get into the habit of carrying your student card with you everywhere in the building as, in particular, the building "locks-down" between 6pm and 8am on weekdays and between 6pm Fridays and 8am Mondays. Entering the Honours/Masters lab (and other secured rooms) and entering/exiting the building during this "lock-down" period will require your student card. The Honours/Masters lab will contain a number of different PCs and a printer that you can use. Note that while first, second, and third year undergraduate students do not have access to the lab, postgraduate students, and staff do. As there are more 4th year students than computers in the Honours/Masters lab, you will not have a permanent seat or position in the room for the whole year. That is, you must share the room with your fellow 4th year students. The School will endeavour to support all reasonable requests for quickly reversible changes to the layout of the lab. Please speak to the 4th year coordinator before making any changes. CommunicationChanges to, or additional information, regarding the 4th year programmes will be posted on the 4th year website.(Real paper) mail will also be placed in the 4th year mailbox, located just outside the Staff Room on the first floor. However, electronic mail facilities are by far the most frequently used medium for communicating with all 4th year students as you're very often not all here at the same time. You should check your email daily. Laser printing and photocopyingThe laser-printers accessible through each of the Linux and Windows networks are to be used with discretion. The School's objective is to provide you with the facilities you need to complete your research, but to keep the costs in check.Room 1.29 (accessed with your security card) has a small photocopier for your use (it is to your left as you walk into the room). It must only be used for copying material directly related to your work in the School and all copyright laws must be adhered to (see the notice above the photocopier). For any large jobs (e.g. > 50 pages), you must first obtain approval from your supervisor. Then, see the School Manager to arrange access. Private copying is only permitted after prior arrangement with the School Manager who will collect payment. If you are using the photocopier outside of normal working hours, please ensure that on leaving, you switch the lights off and that you close the door behind you. Importantly, do not turn the photocopier off. The School's libraryThe School has a small library in room 1.27 (accessed with your security card). It contains a collection of journals and proceedings as well as past Honours and Graduate Diploma dissertations, and MSc and PhD theses. Most of this material may be borrowed, provided that you fill in your name and the book or journal details in the red log-book provided. Note that this material supplements the material that is available in the Mathematics & Physical Sciences library (MPSL). |
