Semester 2, 2009
How to activate your CSSE
account
Please activate your CSSE account so that you can
- send messages to the discussion forum of GENG2140, and
- submit your assignments to cssubmit later on.
Please do so ASAP as Assignment 1 is usually due very early in the
semester.
- If you already used a CSSE account in semester 1, then your user
name and password remain the same as before. To be safe, I suggest that
you try to logon to cssubmit or the discussion forum to ensure that
your
password is exactly what you think it is.
- If you had a CSSE account prior to semester 1 this year, then
your previous CSSE account would have been purged (as we manage
students' accounts on a yearly basis). You should therefore
follow the bullet point below to activate your new CSSE account.
- If you are a Civil Eng., Mech. Eng, or EE student, then it is
unlikely
that you already have CSSE account. If so, please follow the steps
below to activate your account:
- go to the CSSE home page: http://www.csse.uwa.edu.au
- click the link "Current Students" on the left hand
panel
- on the new webpage that shows up, you should see the heading
"Student Information" near the top right corner. Click the link "Find
your first password".
- you should now see the "Welcome to the School of CSSE"
page. Please follow the instruction given on the page to activate your
account. Steps 2 and 3 described on the page there are optional -- you
should have already activated your Central UWA email account and signed
up your tutorial classes on OLCR.
After successfully activating your CSSE account, you should
now have two
accounts: one for the Windows platform and one for the Linux platform.
Files on these two accounts are stored under different computers.
However, since you won't be using any CSSE labs for GENG2140,
you won't be able to access to your Windows account. You should
therefore
use your Linux account only for GENG2140.
The next thing you might want to do immediately is to change your
CSSE
Linux password to something that you can remember easily.
Q. How do you change
your Linux password?
A. Follow the steps described below:
- Point to the CSSE home page: http://www.csse.uwa.edu.au
- On the left hand panel, click on the heading "School and
IT Information".
- You should now see two links appear below the heading. Click
on the link "FAQ".
- More links should appear below the heading FAQ. Click on
link "passwords".
- On the new page that shows up, please read the description
under the heading "Linux passwords from within Windows"
To change your CSSE Linux password from Windows, the best
option is download putty (see the question below) and then
logon to your account through putty. You will firstly need to
connect to the host (uggp.csse.uwa.edu.au) using your old password.
After you have successfully logged on, type:
passwd
You will be prompted to enter your old password to identify yourself.
After that, you will need to enter your preferred new password twice
(the second time is for confirmation). If everything goes well, the
system should display a message saying that you have successfully
changed your password. To log out, simply type: exit
Your new password should be active immediately. Next time
when you logon to the host again, you should use your new password.
Q. Where can you get
putty?
A. Putty is free and and can be obtained from many websites.
By searching for the term "putty download" under google, you should hit
a few websites where putty can be downloaded. You can also find some
useful information from the link "External Access" under the FAQ
heading (see the previous question).
Please note that in order to submit your assignments to
cssubmit, you will need to logon to cssubmit
using your CSSE Linux password. So I suggest that you
logon to csentry, cssubmit, or help2140
to test that
your new CSSE account is working okay.
