Finding refereed publications

General search engines, such as Google and Yahoo, are far from perfect as tools for locating Computer Science research publications. In particular, the results retruned from general search engines are based on the results' popularity, the frequency of similar searches and, sometimes, advertising.

Instead, it is greatly prefered to use indexing and citation website devoted explicitly to Computer Science research publications. An effective indexing and citation website will permit you to locate papers by title, author(s), or publication location, list the (past) citations made by any paper, list (future) papers that cite the paper you're locating, and list other papers also published by the authors.

Here are four very good websites to aid your searches:

  • CiteSeer from Pennsylvania State University, and their newer (beta) CiteSeerX.
  • The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineer's (IEEE's) IEEE Xplore.
  • The Association of Computing Machinery's (ACM's) ACM's Digital Library.
  • Google Scholar provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature, thought it does not focus exclusively on Computer Science literature.

Note that UWA has campus-wide licences to access IEEE Xplore and the ACM Digitial Library. You will be able to download and print full papers while in the CSSE building. From off-campus, you'll be able to locate publications, but not download them.
