HCI (CITS3201) Lab Class 5
Week 8 (22nd April 2009)
Interaction Design Process
Objectives
In this practical you will put into practice ideas on the process
of interaction design which you met in lectures and chapter 9 of your text
book. Specifically, the objective is to enable you to reflect on the process of design and the way that a user-centered
approach could be applied.
The exercises below are based on activities in your text book SRP http://www.id-book.com/index.php
Allocated Time
3-3:45pm Wednesday 22nd April in CS Lab 2.01 (supervised)
OR anytime, anywhere
TodayÕs lab can be performed alone or in small groups.
You will need access to the Internet outside UWA.
Task 1
Imagine
that you want to design a travel planner for yourself. You might use this
system to plan your route, check visa requirements, book flights or train
tickets, investigate the facilities at your destination, and so on. Assume that
the system is destined to run on a desktop system for the purpose of this
activity.
á Make a list of the user experience and usability goals for the
system.
á Outline the initial screen or two for this system, showing
its main functionality and its general look and feel.
á Having produced an outline now spend
about 5 minutes reflecting on how you went about tackling this activity. What
did you do first? Did you have any particular artifacts or experience to base
your design on? What process did you go through?
á Are there any elements that you believe are truly
innovative?
á Now consider the usability criteria again. Tell us exactly
what you would measure to determine the quality and performance of the system
against these criteria.
á Try to do the same thing for user experience goals: is it
satisfying, enjoyable, motivating, rewarding, etc ?
Task 2
Assume that you are involved in developing a new e-commerce
site for selling garden plants. Suggest ways of applying the user-centered principles
in this task.
Task 3
Who do you think are the stakeholders for the check-out system of a large supermarket?
