HCI (CITS3201) Lab Class 8

Week 11 (13th May 2009)

Design, Prototyping and Construction

Objectives

Continues on from the tasks from Lab Class 6 and 7.

In this practical you will put into practice ideas on design, prototyping and construction which you met in lectures and chapter 11 of your text book.  Specifically, the objective is to enable you to start to design an interactive website for booking event tickets.

The exercises below are based on activities in your text book SRP

Allocated Time

3-3:45pm Wednesday, 13th May in CS Lab 2.01 (supervised)

OR anytime, anywhere

TodayŐs lab can be performed alone or in small groups.  You will need access to the Internet outside UWA.

Recall that over the last few weeks, in our lab classes, we compiled requirements for an interactive website for booking tickets online for events like concerts, the theatre, and the cinema.

Task 1

Based on the information gleaned from the tasks in labs in weeks 9 and 10, suggest three different conceptual models for this system. You should consider each of the aspects of a conceptual model discussed in chapter 11: interface metaphor, interaction style, interface style, activities it will support, functions, relationships between functions, and information requirements. Of these conceptual models, decide which one seems most appropriate and articulate the reasons why.

Task 2

Produce the following prototypes for your chosen conceptual model:

1)Using scenarios generated for the ticket reservation system, produce a storyboard for the task of booking a ticket for one of your conceptual models. Show it two or three other students acting as potential users and get some informal feedback.

2)Now develop a card-based prototype (you can tear up paper to make cards) from the use case for the task of booking a ticket, also incorporating feedback from part (1). Show this new prototype to other students and get some more informal feedback.

3)Develop a web-based prototype (a few web pages) incorporating all the feedback you have got so far. (Use Expression web etc or just write simple HTML).

Task 3

Consider the web pageŐs detailed design. Sketch out the applicationŐs main screen (homepage or data entry). Consider the screen layout, use of colours, navigation, audio, animation, etc. While doing this, use the three main questions introduced in Chapter 6 as guidance: Where am I? WhatŐs here? Where can I go? Write one or two sentences explaining your choices, and consider whether the choice is a usability consideration or a user experience consideration.
