Format

This year's exam will have a slightly different format and style compared to previous exams. It will comprise

  • ten multiple choice questions, worth two marks each, and
  • four short answer coding questions, worth ten marks each (each coding question may have multiple parts).
Minor syntactic issues will not be penalised in the coding questions. However, serious syntactic issue will be penalised. For example, forgetting a ';' at the end of a statement is ok, but forgetting to mention the type of a parameter in a method is not ok.

Previous exams

Previous exam papers can be found under the Library's Course Materials Online system (CMO). You need to login using your student card details.

Some of the previous exam papers are available:

To get the full benefit from these papers you must work through them yourself. Unlike exam conditions you have effectively unlimited time, you have access to lecture notes and books, you can work with your friends, and you have access to computers to test code. If you do get stuck on anything you can use help1200, or you can arrange a meeting with me during the study break.

But I will not provide solutions to previous exams. Reading the answers directly has the effect of imbuing the reader with confidence in their perceived knowledge, until they reach the exam where they find that they actually didn't know what they thought they knew...

Other details

  • For the exam timetable see Student Connect
  • The exam is closed book, that is, you cannot bring texts or lecture notes to the exam. No calculators are allowed, and you shouldn't need them.
  • Make sure you bring a pencil and a rubber for answering the multiple choice section.
  • For general information and regulations see the Student Administration Examinations Webpage

Good luck!

The exam period is a stressful time. Look after yourself. Make time for exercise, eat well, and remember that sleep is very important.
